Pick the job before the app
A movie app can help you find a candidate, preserve your film history, locate a provider or agree with another person. Those are different decisions. The best app for recording everything you watch may add unnecessary work when all you need is tonight's film.
| What you need | Start here | Why this is a useful fit | What to account for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal suggestions you can investigate | ReelRecs | Ratings shape recommendations; a title's Rec Score and explanation give you something concrete to assess | Create an account and complete taste setup |
| A diary, reviews and other people's film lists | Letterboxd | Film logging and community activity put your viewing history in context | Decide how much social browsing you want alongside choosing |
| A place to watch a title you already know | JustWatch | Search across providers and distinguish access options | Use your country and confirm access on the provider |
| Recommendations informed by similar viewers | Taste | Its stated approach connects you with users whose preferences align | Build a profile rather than judging it from an empty account |
| A shared choice with ongoing taste profiles | ReelRecs Watch+ | Shared candidates, a Group Score and each member's expressed interest support a conversation | Each participant needs an account, ratings and group membership |
These are recommendations by task. They are not a measured ranking of prediction accuracy.
When ReelRecs earns a place
ReelRecs is particularly useful when you want to ask two connected questions: “What might I like?” and “Why might this particular film suit me?” You can begin with For You suggestions or search for a title someone mentioned elsewhere. Open its personal score explanation, inspect the description and save it if the occasion is wrong.
The existing product walkthrough shows an established profile receiving Killers of the Flower Moon with a Rec Score of 8.0. The explanation relates the suggestion to the profile's ratings. Its 3-hour-26-minute running time still makes it a poor choice for a short evening. That is a useful decision: save a promising film rather than treat a personal score as an instruction to watch now.
When your existing app is enough
If your main pleasure is logging films and reading friends' reviews, keep that routine in Letterboxd. A second app is optional. If you have already agreed on a film and only need to locate it, begin with provider lookup. JustWatch also offers discovery and recommendations; it should not be reduced to a bare search box.
If Taste already produces candidates you enjoy and you like its similar-viewer approach, a switch needs a practical reason. Try ReelRecs when you want to inspect its personal score explanation or use its save-and-return workflow. Do not move your history simply to test one new choosing method.
Make a small, useful comparison
Choose a few films you have seen and can judge clearly, including one you liked and one you disliked. Supply honest ratings where the app requests them. Inspect three unseen candidates rather than scrolling through dozens. For each candidate ask whether the reason fits, whether you can watch it, and whether you can find it again later.
Judge the result against your own task. A useful app should leave you with a manageable next step. For a group, confirm that each person is willing to participate before choosing a system that needs several accounts. A short conversation can be sufficient for a one-off evening.
