ReelRecs vs JustWatch for deciding what to watch
Use JustWatch when your main question is where a title is available. Try ReelRecs when you also want a personal score and explanation to help decide whether to choose it. Both can help with discovery; the practical distinction is whether provider lookup or your own taste is the decision you need to resolve.

Start with the question you have
“I want to watch this movie” and “I want a movie I will enjoy” lead to different searches. A provider directory is especially useful for the first. A personal taste profile can help with the second and with checking a title someone has already recommended.
| What you need | JustWatch | ReelRecs |
|---|---|---|
| Find a named film | Country-specific streaming guide | Search the title and open Where to Watch |
| Browse within constraints | Catalog filters including provider, runtime and price | Personal suggestions plus title details and provider options |
| Understand personal fit | Discovery and catalog browsing | Rec Score with an explanation linked to your taste |
| Decide whether to pay | Compare the available offers | Assess interest before checking a provider's current charge |
| Start watching | Follow the provider offer | Continue through the provider's service |
JustWatch's US catalog lets viewers narrow results by factors such as runtime, release year, rating and price. It also has popular, upcoming and provider-specific discovery pages. It is more than a single search box. JustWatch US guide.
When someone recommends a particular movie
Imagine a friend mentions Past Lives. First decide whether you are looking for any way to watch it or only an option included in a subscription you already pay for. This keeps a rental offer from becoming a surprise at the last step.
In ReelRecs, create an account and complete taste setup, then search for the film and check its year. Open its title page and inspect Rec Score. Tap the information icon to read why the film may suit your profile. Use that explanation alongside the premise and runtime before opening provider options.
The title-check walkthrough shows an existing profile receiving Rec Score 7.0 for Past Lives (2023). In that captured US example, Subscription was empty while Rent showed offers. That is a useful distinction: an empty subscription category does not establish that the movie cannot be watched. Those historical offers are not a current price quote.
When the evening starts without a title
Set two limits before opening either app: how much time you have and whether you are willing to pay beyond your existing subscriptions. Then make a short list of possibilities. JustWatch is useful for reducing the catalog to eligible options; ReelRecs can help investigate which of those options fits your taste.
A film being included does not make it a good choice for the occasion. You might have access to a long, demanding drama while wanting something light. Equally, a promising Rec Score does not change the film's running time or make a rental free. Check both fit and access before settling on it.
For a first ReelRecs session, start with a film you already wanted to investigate. This gives the taste setup a concrete purpose. Save the title if it looks appealing but does not fit tonight, rather than treating every recommendation as an instruction to watch immediately.
Which should you use?
Keep JustWatch as your main tool if you already know what you want and mostly need a provider. Add ReelRecs if you repeatedly find yourself asking whether the available choices will suit you. The ReelRecs iPhone download is free, but personal recommendations require an account and ratings. Neither a free discovery app nor a provider logo removes the provider's own access requirements.
