Taste alternatives for personal movie recommendations
ReelRecs is a Taste alternative for personal movie and TV recommendations with a Rec Score, an explanation and a saved list. Letterboxd is a different choice for film logging and community lists. JustWatch is useful when finding a provider is the main problem. Choose the alternative around what you want to improve.

Start with the reason you are looking
A useful alternative solves the part of your current routine that is failing. “Another movie app” is too broad. You might want clearer reasons, fewer lists to maintain, stronger film-community discovery or an easier way to locate a provider. Each reason leads to a different shortlist.
| What you want to improve | Alternative to inspect | What to try first |
|---|---|---|
| Understand why a film might fit you | ReelRecs | Set up a taste profile, open a personal score explanation and assess the reasons |
| Record and discuss your viewing | Letterboxd | Log a film and explore a relevant person's list |
| Find access to a known title | JustWatch | Search the title in your country and compare provider categories |
| Decide with your partner over time | ReelRecs Watch+ | Check both people's setup requirements before forming a group |
| Avoid another account tonight | Your existing streaming service and a short agreed shortlist | Choose among a few accessible films rather than rebuilding a profile |
This is a selection by need. The streaming-service route is included because creating another account is not always the useful next step.
ReelRecs for inspecting personal fit
ReelRecs starts with titles you have watched and rated. For You supplies candidates; a title page lets you inspect the personal prediction and its explanation. You can also search for a title from outside the app. The title-checking guide demonstrates that route with Past Lives.
A good first comparison is whether the explanation helps you decide. Can you relate its reasons to your own opinions? Is there a warning about a difference that matters tonight? Can you save the candidate and recover it later? Those questions are more useful than comparing two score numbers with different meanings.
You do not need to bring friends to use personal discovery. Watch+ adds a shared-choice route later, with separate accounts, taste profiles and group participation. A blank Friend Score should not be interpreted as an obstacle to having your own opinion or using personal recommendations.
Letterboxd when the film record matters most
Letterboxd's diary, reviews, watchlist and member lists make it a strong choice for an ongoing film record. Use this route when you want to discuss what you watched and find films through people and lists you follow. You can keep that history while trying ReelRecs for the narrower moment of choosing a next title.
The companion routine is manual: select familiar titles from your record, rate them in ReelRecs, and keep each product for the job it serves. This article does not promise a Taste or Letterboxd import into ReelRecs.
JustWatch when access is the obstacle
Sometimes the recommendation is already settled. You know the movie and want to see where it is available. A provider-focused search can resolve that question without trying another taste profile. Set the relevant country, distinguish an included subscription from a rental, and confirm on the actual provider.
If you keep finding accessible films you do not want to watch, personal discovery may be the missing step. If you have plenty of good candidates but cannot locate them, address access first.
Keep the switch small
Before moving anything, choose a few unseen candidates and evaluate the new routine. Keep your existing account and records while doing so. If you later decide to leave a paid plan, cancellation and account deletion are separate actions; consult that product's current official account help.
Choose ReelRecs when the personal explanation and save-and-return flow improve the decision you came to make. A successful trial leaves you with a title you understand and can find again, rather than another large list to manage.
