Letterboxd alternatives for discovery, diaries and choosing together
For a film diary and an existing film community, keeping Letterboxd often makes sense. Try ReelRecs for personal movie and TV suggestions, Trakt or SIMKL for episode-focused records, and a shared-choice workflow when the main problem is agreeing on tonight’s film.

Decide what you want to change
Start with the last time Letterboxd left a job unfinished. Was it remembering what you watched, finding something you might enjoy, or agreeing with another person? Those lead to different alternatives.
A replacement that creates a nice shortlist but loses years of diary entries can make your overall routine worse. You can also keep your record and change only the way you choose the next film.
| Your main need | Start here | What to check before moving |
|---|---|---|
| Film diary, reviews and people you follow | Letterboxd itself | Whether a different list or follow selection solves the issue |
| Personal movie and TV suggestions with a reason to inspect | ReelRecs | Whether its rating setup and explanations help your decisions |
| Keeping track of episodes | Trakt or SIMKL | Your exact series, episode order, history fields and connected services |
| Picking with another person | ReelRecs Watch+ or Queue | Both people's setup and how you express interest in a candidate |
When keeping Letterboxd is the useful answer
Letterboxd documents a diary, ratings, reviews, lists and friend activity. Those are valuable even if you sometimes struggle to pick from your watchlist. Someone who enjoys writing a paragraph after each film should preserve that habit rather than choose an alternative solely for its recommendation screen.
Try giving your existing list a narrower purpose. A list of three films you could watch this week asks less of you than an archive of every interesting film you have encountered. If that resolves the problem, changing accounts adds little.
When personal discovery is the missing part
ReelRecs is worth trying when the question is, “Would this suit me?” Create your account, complete taste setup and inspect a suggestion’s personal Rec Score and explanation. The personal recommendation walkthrough shows the complete path.
A practical companion routine is to take two films from your Letterboxd watchlist and search for them in ReelRecs. Inspect their reasons, check the practical details, then choose or save a candidate. Keep your diary where you already maintain it. This is a manual routine; it does not rely on an import or account connection.
When television records matter most
If you want to know the next unwatched episode, compare Trakt and SIMKL before moving your history. Their documentation covers tracking and import routes. Start with one series that has specials or multiple seasons. A matching title count alone does not establish that episode progress, dates and rewatches survived a transfer.
Save your original export, where available, and keep the old account until the fields you care about are accounted for. Friends, review comments and your place in a community are separate from a file of ratings.
When the decision belongs to two people
A person's film diary can inform the conversation, but it does not record what both people want tonight. Queue describes collaborative lists and swiping with a friend. ReelRecs has a Watch+ walkthrough showing shared suggestions and interest.
Use a simple test: can both people identify a candidate they would willingly watch and find it again? If one person prefers to avoid another account, discuss a short list together on one screen. A spoken yes remains useful without pretending it creates a second taste profile.
Choose the smallest change that solves the missing job. Product features above come from the linked official sources; the worked companion routine is a suggested method, not a migration test.
