Movie recommendation apps compared on privacy and account requirements
Choose by the information and controls you are comfortable using. Public browsing can answer an occasional movie question without creating a taste profile. A saved personal account offers continuity but associates your activity with that account. ReelRecs requires an account and ratings for personal recommendations; review its visibility and measurement controls before building your profile.

Compare the disclosures that change your decision
An app can offer a private profile while still processing activity for recommendations or analytics. Conversely, a page you browse without signing in may still use cookies and other measurement tools. Look at account visibility, data use and deletion as separate questions.
| Service | Account and preference routine | What its published information makes clear | Deletion route described |
|---|---|---|---|
| ReelRecs | Account and watched-title ratings for personal recommendations | Profiles generally start public; private setting available; recommendation training and measurement disclosed | Settings → Account → Delete Account |
| Taste | Ratings and preferences build a saved taste profile | Policy describes personalization, cookies and third-party service processing | Web profile → Settings → Delete account, per FAQ |
| Letterboxd | Account for your diary, ratings and lists | Notice covers account/activity data, cookies and advertising; review visibility controls for entries | Settings for account data controls; privacy contact for requests |
| JustWatch | Public catalog browsing; account features add continuity | Policy describes cookies, analytics and interest-based advertising | Privacy requests through privacy@justwatch.com |

What to decide before rating in ReelRecs
ReelRecs policy version 1.6.0 says profiles and activity are public by default, with regional exceptions. Settings → Privacy → Private Account changes who can see your profile and activity. Group votes remain visible to fellow Watch+ members. The optional group-approval setting lets you control being added.
The policy also describes using activity for recommendation training. You can object by emailing privacy@reelrecs.com. On Android version 1.0.30 onward, the third-party-sharing switch stops specified new ReelRecs measurement calls to TikTok and Meta. It does not stop PostHog product analytics or all automatic TikTok activity, and previously sent data is not erased by that switch.
Camera-based Couch Cam is optional. Basic title search and rating do not require you to use it. Review these choices before sharing a history you regard as personal; you can still use personal discovery without recruiting friends.
A public page and a private account solve different needs
If you want one suggestion for tonight, browsing a public catalog, review or editorial guide may be enough. You can note the candidate yourself. That avoids creating another saved entertainment profile, while the site's disclosed measurement still applies.
If you want recommendations to reflect your reactions over time, a continuing profile can be useful. Supply honest ratings for things you have watched. Avoid adding optional biographical information merely to fill every field. Before posting a review or joining a group, check who will see it.
For Letterboxd, inspect the visibility choice for the specific entry rather than assuming every part of a diary shares one audience. Taste's policy covers preference-based personalization; its FAQ provides the deletion steps. The existence of a deletion button should not be read as a promise that every backup or legally retained record disappears instantly.
Make an informed first session
Decide whether you want public browsing or an account, review profile visibility, and check the optional permissions you intend to use. You can decline a feature you do not need and still judge whether the core discovery routine suits you.
Keep a copy of a list you would miss before deleting any account. If a control's scope is unclear, ask the service about that specific data use. A useful choice rests on the disclosures and behavior relevant to you, without declaring one app universally the most private.
