Chrome extension privacy
Effective November 1, 2026 · ReelRecs Inc.
The ReelRecs Chrome extension helps you identify movies and shows, check US viewing options, play trailers and save titles on your browser. No ReelRecs account is required. This page explains the extension specifically; our general privacy policy covers the website and other ReelRecs services.
What happens when you use it
| Action | What stays on your device | What is sent |
|---|---|---|
| Open the side panel | Saved titles and settings | No title lookup starts until you act. |
| Search or use selected text | Your draft, until you submit or deliberately use the lookup action | The submitted title name, optional year and result limit go to ReelRecs. |
| Enable a site’s highlights | The allowed site and matching article text. Matching runs locally in readable article areas and skips forms and editors. | The extension downloads a public title catalog from ReelRecs. It does not send the article or its address. |
| Hover over or open a title | The article and page address | The title’s catalog ID and US country go to ReelRecs for public details and offers. Displayed artwork may load from ReelRecs, TMDB or IMDb image hosts. |
| Save a title or select services | Title IDs, names, years, saved dates and preferences in this Chrome profile | Nothing is synced to a ReelRecs account. |
| Play a trailer | The player state | Your browser requests the selected video from Internet Video Archive. Playback starts only after you press Play. |
| Open a provider or website link | Your saved list | Your browser visits that site, which receives ordinary connection details and applies its own privacy terms. |
Data use and retention
ReelRecs uses lookup data to return the requested title and viewing information. Requests also involve normal connection details such as your IP address. Access and security logs may include that address, request path, time and response status. Extension lookup bodies are not recorded as assistant tool conversations.
The extension has no usage analytics, advertising SDK or account connection. It does not collect your browsing history, cookies, passwords or private ratings. It does not sell extension data, use it for advertising, or transfer it for purposes unrelated to the extension’s core function. ReelRecs limits use to providing the requested function and operating and protecting the service.
Saved titles and preferences remain in local extension storage until you remove them, clear the extension’s data or uninstall it. The public title catalog is refreshed after 24 hours when needed. A selected-title request is kept in temporary browser-session storage until the panel takes it, then deleted. Closing its window also removes it. Requests older than 30 minutes are discarded when the panel takes them. It is not a browsing-history record.
Why Chrome asks for permissions
- Side panel: keep title information beside the page you are reading.
- Context menu: let you select a title and look it up from the right-click menu.
- Storage: keep saves, preferences and the public title catalog in your browser.
- Active tab and scripting: enable title matching on the current site after you choose it.
- Optional website access: highlight article titles on each site you explicitly allow. Site access is off by default.
- ReelRecs service access: request the public catalog, title search and US viewing options.
Your controls
Open extension Settings to turn off a site, remove a saved title or clear all saves, settings and site permissions. Chrome’s Manage extensions page also controls site access and removal. The extension is unavailable in Incognito mode.
Links to reelrecs.com can include fixed labels such as “chrome_extension” and “title_details” so a voluntary website visit can be attributed to this tool. These labels contain no installation identifier, source-page address or article text. The website asks separately for optional analytics consent and respects its existing privacy controls.
