IMDb alternatives for recommendations, ratings and film information

Use a reference database for cast and credits, a film community for reviews and diaries, and a personal recommendation app for deciding what fits you. ReelRecs adds a personal Rec Score and explanation; it need not replace IMDb as a source of film information.

Keep the question specific

IMDb can enter your evening in several ways. You might recognize an actor, check a runtime, read audience reactions or search for a future watch. A good alternative for one of those jobs may be a poor replacement for the others.

Write down the task you want to improve before downloading anything. “I need another film database” is a much bigger change than “I want suggestions that make sense for me.”

What you need A useful place to start
Cast, credits and identifying the correct title IMDb or The Movie Database
Film reviews, lists and a personal diary Letterboxd
Critic approval and audience response as separate measures Rotten Tomatoes
A personal reason to consider a movie or show ReelRecs or Taste
Your next episode and an ongoing viewing record Trakt or SIMKL

For research, preserve the facts

When checking whether two films share a cinematographer, a personal recommendation score is beside the point. Search the exact title and year, find the relevant credit, then inspect the person's filmography. The Movie Database is another title-and-people reference worth checking for this job.

Keep factual identity separate from opinion. Remakes and different works with the same name can produce a convincing-looking answer about the wrong film. A year and director often settle the mismatch more quickly than reading another review.

For public opinion, understand the measure

IMDb's displayed rating is a weighted average of user votes. Rotten Tomatoes separates critic approval from audience approval. Letterboxd places member reviews and film lists close to the viewing record. Those communities and methods answer somewhat different questions.

Suppose a film has strong public approval but reviews repeatedly describe a slow pace. If you want a brisk thriller tonight, the words explain why acclaim may not translate into the right choice. Read for the relevant quality instead of converting every number to a universal ten-point verdict.

For a personal decision, inspect the reason

ReelRecs is a candidate when you want to know whether a particular movie or show fits your own preferences. Complete taste setup, search the title or browse For You, then examine the personal score and explanation. The recorded walkthrough shows this process on a rated demonstration profile.

The practical test is whether the explanation helps you act. Does it connect a candidate to something meaningful in your viewing taste? Can you decide to watch, save for later or pass without opening ten more tabs? A high score alone is less useful than a reason you can evaluate.

Taste is another personal-discovery option, describing recommendations based on ratings and preferences. Compare the relevance of the information you get rather than treating the word “personalized” as proof of superior results.

Keep your record while trying the new routine

If you already rate films on IMDb, preserve that history. IMDb documents exporting your ratings as a CSV file. Check what an intended destination accepts before calling it a migration. An exported rating list may not carry your friends, comments or all list details.

You can keep IMDb for research and ratings while trying ReelRecs for choosing. Manually assess a few candidates first. There is no need to move years of history to learn whether the new recommendation workflow helps.
