Choose a film for guests whose tastes you do not know well

Ask guests for a recent film they enjoyed, one firm avoidance and their available time. Offer a few clearly different options and let everyone decline without defending their taste. Use your ReelRecs profile to investigate candidates, while remembering that your personal prediction describes you.

Ask for examples guests can answer

“Do you like thrillers?” can hide more than it reveals. A person may like puzzle mysteries but dislike sustained fear. Ask for a recent movie they enjoyed and what appealed about it. One concrete example gives you a starting point without turning the visit into a questionnaire.

Also ask about a firm avoidance and the latest finish time. Do this before opening trailers. It is easier for a guest to state a boundary before the host has invested in selling a favorite film.

Offer a small, legible menu

Prepare two or three candidates with distinct experiences. Describe the actual choice in ordinary language: a talky relationship story, a lively adventure or a tense mystery. Include the reason someone might pass.

Guest information Hosting response
Likes a mystery but avoids graphic violence Check content advice as well as the genre
Wants a light evening Consider emotional weight and awkwardness, not only a comedy label
Needs to leave early Check the exact runtime before asking for enthusiasm
Happy to rewatch a favorite Keep that option available if others are interested
Says “anything” Give concrete alternatives so a preference becomes easier to express

These are editorial prompts. The guest's verbal answer does not automatically become a profile in ReelRecs.

Use your account as one source

You can open personal suggestions or search a candidate by name. Read the explanation and compare it with what guests told you. A reason based on your love of demanding crime dramas may be less helpful for a guest who wants an easy conversation afterward.

Say what you know: “This looks like a good fit for me, and the premise sounds close to what you mentioned.” Avoid presenting your score as a prediction for someone whose taste information the app does not have.

If several guests already use ReelRecs and want to participate, a Watch+ group can bring joined profiles into the choosing process. Otherwise a normal conversation is enough. The hosting task should not depend on persuading visitors to install an app.

Make declining socially easy

Ask privately about sensitive content limits if that feels more comfortable. During the choice, let a simple “not tonight” count. Requiring an explanation can make the least enthusiastic person agree just to end the discussion.

If every candidate fails, change the plan. A shorter episode, a familiar rewatch or continuing the conversation without a screen may fit the gathering better. There is no obligation to rescue the shortlist.

Confirm the practical details

Open the chosen provider on the device you will use and verify the title, available audio or subtitles, and price. Check volume and display settings before people settle in. A saved title is useful preparation; the final offer still needs confirmation.

Keep any appealing rejected option in Bookmarks for another occasion. That preserves a good recommendation while respecting that tonight's audience has different needs.
