Trakt alternatives for history, tracking and discovery

For a tracking replacement, compare SIMKL against the exact records and connections you use. Letterboxd may suit a film diary, while ReelRecs can help choose the next movie or show alongside Trakt. Preserve your history first and use current import instructions rather than assuming a continuing sync exists.

Decide whether your history needs to move

A detailed viewing record can include dates, repeat watches, episode progress, lists and ratings. Personal recommendations are only one possible use of that information. If the record works but your next choice does not, adding a discovery companion can avoid a large migration.

Trakt's own documentation covers account data imports and exports, connected apps and streaming settings. Keep those separate in your decision. A file transfer moves a snapshot; an integration may update activity later.

Choose by what you need to retain

Your priority Direction to investigate
TV progress plus movies and anime SIMKL and its current import options
A film diary with written reactions Letterboxd, after checking the fields your export can supply
Personal assessment of the next film or show ReelRecs as a companion
The existing playback connections and history already work Keep Trakt and improve only discovery

Avoid moving just because a new service presents a cleaner first screen. Open the detail for a series you know well and check what the record means.

A current import detail that matters

SIMKL's Trakt import page, checked October 23, 2026, offers a Trakt export ZIP upload. It also says connecting Trakt no longer imports data because SIMKL's API access has been blocked. That makes older instructions promising an automatic Trakt connection unreliable for this move.

Follow the current file-based instructions instead: request the export in Trakt's Data settings, preserve the downloaded ZIP, then use the supported SIMKL import route. The importer describes watch history, planned titles and ratings. Confirm which other fields matter to you rather than assuming they all transfer.

This is a documented route, not a migration we performed on a user's account.

Check meaning, not only totals

After any migration, inspect a completed film, a series in progress and a title you watched twice. Check dates where you care about them. For an anime series or a show with specials, compare the episode mapping too.

A total of 500 titles can still conceal a missing rewatch, an incorrect season or a rating that did not carry over. Keep the original until the specific records are useful in the new home. You can make corrections gradually without deleting the source.

If choosing is the only weak point

Keep tracking in Trakt. Search one or two prospective titles in ReelRecs and inspect their personal scores and explanations after taste setup. The named-title walkthrough shows the steps.

This is manual companion use. ReelRecs is not presented here as an automatic Trakt importer or playback tracker. Your existing record continues to answer what you watched; the extra check helps with what you might watch next.

Evaluate the ongoing cost

Before subscribing to a replacement, check the current limits on the feature you need: connections, list size, detailed exports or repeat-watch tracking. A free signup does not tell you the cost of recreating your whole routine.

Use the alternative for one ordinary week while preserving the old record. Choose it if the day-to-day effort, data fidelity and relevant features justify the change. If the original record remains valuable, improving recommendations alongside it can be enough.
