What to watch
What to watch after The Last of Us if horror was not the main appeal
Choose Leave No Trace for a protective parent-child bond without a ruined civilization, Station Eleven for people rebuilding meaning after catastrophe, Sweet Tooth for a protective partnership in a more fantastical world, or Children of Men for an urgent escort journey. Leave No Trace is our first choice if you want to step away from horror.

A protective bond does not require another monster story
If The Last of Us worked for you because of the relationship between people traveling together, a generic list of survival horror may point in the wrong direction. The thing you want again could be trust developing slowly, a protective adult making difficult choices, or the question of what remains valuable when ordinary life breaks down.
These four recommendations preserve different parts of that experience. They vary substantially in violence and emotional strain. Our comparisons are editorial, and the specific content notes below link to official distributor or classification information.
| What mattered to you | Candidate | The main difference |
|---|---|---|
| An adult and a young person with a deep, difficult bond | Leave No Trace (2018) | A grounded family drama in the present day |
| Culture, memory and community after catastrophe | Station Eleven (2021 series) | A ten-episode limited series with a nonlinear structure |
| A wary protector and a vulnerable young traveler | Sweet Tooth (2021 series) | A more fantastical world; three seasons, 24 episodes |
| Protecting someone through a collapsing social order | Children of Men (2006) | A 110-minute film with strong violence |
Leave No Trace: follow the relationship into ordinary life
A father and teenage daughter have been living in the forests near Portland before circumstances force them into a different way of life. Bleecker Street's official synopsis establishes their situation.
Choose it if the compelling question was how love and protection can coexist with different needs. Without an apocalyptic setting, small choices between the two people become easier to see. It is our strongest recommendation for someone who liked the bond in The Last of Us while tolerating its horror.
Skip it if slow, observational drama leaves you restless. It also deals with trauma. The BBFC's content guidance notes implied post-traumatic stress, injury and drug references. The quieter presentation is a change in intensity, not a promise of emotional ease.
Station Eleven: for what survives beyond survival
A devastating pandemic changes the lives of people whose stories connect across time. The official production announcement identifies Station Eleven as a ten-episode limited series.
Choose it if you were most interested in art, memory, connection and the things people preserve after a catastrophe. Its shifting timeline asks you to notice relationships between earlier and later experiences. Skip it if you need a straightforward journey or want to avoid pandemic loss. There is danger in this world even when immediate physical survival is not the focus of a scene.
Sweet Tooth: for a protective partnership with a different texture
A boy who is part human and part deer travels through a changed world with a gruff protector. Netflix describes that central pairing. Its official final-season article confirms a three-season, 24-episode story; that detail was checked on October 23, 2026.
Choose it when you want the growing bond and journey, with more overt fantasy in the world around them. Skip it if endangered children are a particular source of distress. The more whimsical appearance should not be mistaken for an assurance that nothing frightening happens. Check the provider's content rating for the people watching with you.
Children of Men: for urgency and moral responsibility
In a world where births have ceased, a disillusioned man is asked to escort a pregnant woman to safety. Universal lists the film's premise, 110-minute runtime and strong-violence advisory.
Choose it if the difficult protection mission was the main appeal. Its immediate danger creates a very different evening from Leave No Trace. Skip it when your aim is to get away from violence, confinement or a hostile social world. Removing monsters does not make this the calmer option.
Keep your content limits separate from personal fit
Start with Leave No Trace for the bond or Station Eleven for rebuilding a life. Choose Children of Men only when you want another intense journey.
