What to watch after Succession

Choose Industry for career ambition and financial pressure, Veep for sharp political comedy, The Favourite for power exercised through intimate relationships, or The Royal Tenenbaums for adult children living with family disappointment. The Royal Tenenbaums is the warmer change of direction; Industry keeps the pressure high.

Decide what you want to keep from Succession

The pursuit of power, the dialogue and the family history are all plausible reasons to love Succession. A recommendation that preserves only the wealth may miss the point. You could want the pleasure of a vicious exchange, the discomfort of watching someone seek approval, or the mechanics of a changing alliance.

Our four routes separate those attractions. Two are series for sustained company; two are films for a single evening. None requires knowing the outcome of Succession, and we do not discuss the endings of the candidates.

The appeal Choose What changes
Ambition under professional pressure Industry (2020 series) Younger characters trying to secure their place
Fast, cruel, politically charged comedy Veep (2012 series) Comedy becomes the main engine
Affection used as an instrument of power The Favourite (2018 film) An eighteenth-century court and stylized visual language
Adult children shaped by a difficult parent The Royal Tenenbaums (2001 film) More tenderness and a storybook atmosphere

Industry: for people who want in

A group of graduates compete for positions at a London investment bank. HBO's official description emphasizes the unstable boundaries between colleague, friend, lover and rival.

The useful connection is the pressure to make yourself valuable to people who can discard you. Choose Industry if deal-making, status and professional survival were what held your attention in Succession. Its characters begin from a different relationship to power, which changes the emotional stakes of their choices.

Skip it if you want relief from workplace cruelty or explicit adult material. The pace and professional language also make it a poor choice for background viewing. Treat it as a serialized commitment and check the current season list; this page makes no claim that its story is finished.

Veep: for the language of self-interest

Selina Meyer and her staff attempt to manage the demands of political office, public appearances and personal ambition. HBO's press description establishes the vice-presidential starting point.

Choose Veep if the insults and small acts of self-preservation were your favorite part of Succession. Failure, vanity and frantic damage control generate the comedy. The shorter episode format makes it easier to try an evening without the weight of a feature-length drama.

Skip it if you need a character to become admirable before you enjoy spending time with them. It is a different form of pleasure from watching a family slowly reveal its wounds. The story continues across episodes, even though each provides a concentrated comic situation.

The Favourite: for intimacy as a route to power

Two women compete for influence around Queen Anne. Searchlight's synopsis describes the court relationships and their political consequences.

The setting changes, but access to a powerful person's affection still affects everyone nearby. Choose it if you liked how Succession turns an apparently private conversation into a negotiation. Its framing, physical comedy and performance style are more conspicuous than the television show's observational approach.

Skip it if period settings feel like homework or you want warm companionship. The jokes can be funny and painful within the same exchange.

The Royal Tenenbaums: for the family underneath the achievement

Three formerly gifted children carry the consequences of disappointment and an unreliable father into adulthood. Criterion lists Wes Anderson's 2001 film at 110 minutes.

Choose it if the need for parental recognition mattered more than corporate control. Its carefully arranged world and melancholy humor offer a warmer route, though the family damage remains real. Skip it if you want business strategy, naturalistic staging or a light comedy without distress.

Put one title on tonight's list

We would choose Industry to continue the professional pressure and The Royal Tenenbaums to change the emotional temperature. For comic hostility, start Veep.
