Jack Lemmon is Howard Brubaker, a newly promoted executive whose unhappy marriage sends him ducking out of a loud company party with Catherine Deneuve’s Catherine. The catch is that Catherine is just as trapped in her own marriage — and her husband happens to be Howard’s boss. Over the course of an innocent night in New York, the two drift through bars, taxis, and late-night conversation, finding themselves drawn together as Catherine talks about leaving for Paris and Howard starts to imagine stepping out of the life he already has.
