He Who Must Die
Drama128 min
A Greek village under Turkish occupation in the 1920s prepares its annual Passion play, assigning local people to the roles of Christ, Judas, and Mary Magdalene. When a band of impoverished refugees arrives with their priest, the ritual stops feeling symbolic: the village’s landowners and church leaders close ranks, and the chosen performers find their parts bleeding into everyday life. A stuttering shepherd cast as Jesus and a resentful butcher named Judas stand at the center of the conflict, as faith, class, and violence collide. Jean Servais and Melina Mercouri are part of the ensemble in this French-language adaptation of Nikos Kazantzakis’s Christ Recrucified.
