The Mystery of Picasso

Documentary78 min

A blank sheet becomes the stage as Pablo Picasso starts with quick black-and-white marker drawings and, line by line, turns them into faces, animals, and shifting scenes. Filmed from the back of the easel, the camera catches ink bleeding through the paper so the image seems to appear on its own, while each change to a figure is visible in real time. As the film goes on, the drawings grow more elaborate, moving from simple sketches to collages and then to oil paintings. Henri-Georges Clouzot changes the method too, using cuts that let each canvas show its own revisions, so the viewer watches not just finished works but the false starts, erasures, and transformations that lead to them.
