Hotel du Nord

ComedyDramaRomance97 min

At a small hotel on Paris’s Canal Saint-Martin, a dejected young couple are torn apart by a gunshot that sends shockwaves through the people living and working there. Annabella and Jean-Pierre Aumont center the story as the troubled lovers, while Arletty’s prostitute and Louis Jouvet’s pimp bring a second, more hardened relationship into view. Around them, the Hôtel du Nord fills with waiters, neighbors, and drifters, sketching a working-class Paris where chance encounters and intimate dramas unfold side by side. Romance and disappointment sit close together in this 1938 French portrait of life along the canal.
