La Pointe Courte

DramaRomance86 min

In La Pointe Courte, the fishing quarter of Sète in southern France, a husband and wife pick through a marriage that may be ending. Philippe Noiret and Silvia Monfort are the couple at the center, their stylized conversations unfolding alongside the daily life of the village around them. As they weigh separation and attachment, the film turns outward to fishermen dealing with inspections and uncertainty, children roaming the streets, and neighbors moving through work and routine by the water. In Agnès Varda’s debut, intimate relationship drama and a documentary-like portrait of a Mediterranean community share the same frame.
