P.L. Travers arrives in 1961 Los Angeles with little interest in handing Mary Poppins over to Hollywood, while Walt Disney keeps pressing for the screen rights he has chased for years. Emma Thompson is the sharp, guarded Travers, sparring with Tom Hanks’s genial but persistent Disney through story meetings, songs, and a studio charm offensive. As the negotiations drag on, the film cuts back to Travers’s childhood in rural Queensland, where family memories and an ailing father shaped the character she refuses to give up.
