In Terrence Malick’s portrait of a little-known resister, that stand is inseparable from the life Franz is trying to protect: his marriage, his children, and his small rural community. Valerie Pachner’s Fani is at the center of that home life, sharing the strain as church authorities, state power, and village opinion close in around them.
