The story

In 1940s Venice, retired art critic Nino Rolfe is trying to revive a marriage that has gone stale by writing down his fantasies and leaving them for his younger wife to find. Frank Finlay’s Nino turns private obsession into a ritual of diaries, jealousy, and provocation, while Stefania Sandrelli’s Teresa moves between inhibition and curiosity as their relationship shifts. With fascism in the background and desire pushed into the open, the film centers on a long-married couple testing the limits of intimacy, secrecy, and infidelity.
