Boudu Saved from Drowning
Comedy85 min
After a desperate jump into the Seine, Boudu is pulled from the water by a respectable Paris bookseller and brought into his comfortable home. Michel Simon is Boudu, an unruly tramp whose manners, appetites, and refusal to fit in throw the Lestingois household off balance; Charles Granval’s Edouard means to do a good deed, then finds his family and routines steadily upended by their guest. Working in 1930s Paris, Jean Renoir turns the rescue into a social comedy that needles bourgeois respectability through Boudu’s disruptive presence.
