Along Marseille’s port, bar owner César depends on his son Marius to help run the family business, but every departing ship feeds the young man’s hunger to see the world. Raimu is César, a warm, steady presence behind the bar, while Pierre Fresnay’s Marius and his childhood friend Fanny (Orane Demazis) begin to see that their lifelong bond has become love. When the older, well-off Panisse seeks Fanny’s hand and a clipper needs another deckhand, Marius is pulled between the life waiting at home and the one calling from the harbor.
