After a young couple stops at a village inn, the man is taken by Death and hidden behind an immense wall with no door or window. Lil Dagover's grieving young woman finds a way through and comes face to face with Death himself, with Bernhard Goetzke as the weary, implacable figure holding her lover beyond reach. He offers her one chance to change what has happened, sending her through three tragic love stories in a Middle Eastern city, Venice, and China, each echoing her own loss. Fritz Lang's 1921 silent film blends folktale structure, expressionist design, and an unusually intimate portrait of bargaining with the inevitable.
