Thymian Henning is a sheltered young woman whose life is upended after an assault by the clerk in her father’s pharmacy leaves her pregnant and abandoned by her family. Louise Brooks is Thymian, moving from innocence to hard-earned self-possession as she is pushed from home into institutions that police and profit from vulnerable women, including a girls’ reformatory and a brothel. Opposite her, Fritz Rasp’s pharmacy clerk is only the first figure to exploit her fall from respectability. The story follows Thymian through a social world where family reputation, sexual hypocrisy, and punishment are tightly bound together.
