The Story of Adele H
DramaRomance98 min
In the 19th century, Adèle Hugo leaves Europe for Nova Scotia and the West Indies, pursuing a British officer who won’t return her devotion. Isabelle Adjani is Adèle, the daughter of Victor Hugo, moving through boarding houses and military outposts under an assumed name as she writes letters and clings to the possibility of a future with him. Albert Pinson (Bruce Robinson) remains distant, but she keeps following, even as the pursuit grows more secretive and more unstable. François Truffaut’s film draws from Adèle Hugo’s diaries and keeps its focus tight on a woman disappearing into her own fixation.
