Vladimir and Rosa
Drama106 min
A courtroom becomes a political allegory in this French-language interpretation of the Chicago Eight trial after the 1968 Democratic National Convention protests. Jean-Luc Godard and Jean-Pierre Gorin recast Judge Hoffman as Judge Himmler (Ernest Menzer), while the defendants stand in for rival currents of the French Revolution, turning a famous American case into something stranger and more polemical. Godard and Gorin also appear as the titular Vladimir and Rosa, with Juliet Berto and Yves Afonso moving through the film’s shifting mix of trial drama, satire, and political argument.
