Retired gangster Antoine runs a boating club on the coast and wants his old life behind him. Lino Ventura is Antoine, pulled back toward familiar trouble when a former accomplice arrives asking for a loan and promises the money will come from a crook now in hiding. Instead of waiting, Antoine goes after the debt himself, following a trail that leads back through old criminal connections and uneasy partnerships. Jean Lefebvre, Mireille Darc, and Michel Constantin fill out the circle around him as the film threads gangland business through a lighter, briskly comic setup.
