An eccentric New York comedy writer lives by his own rules, filling the apartment with jokes, schemes, and a steady refusal to join the ordinary working world. That freewheeling life is threatened when officials decide his young nephew needs a more stable home, forcing the uncle to prove he can act like a responsible adult or lose custody. As he tries to satisfy social workers and face the kind of job he has spent years avoiding, the clash between his independence and everyone else’s idea of normal keeps tightening. Jason Robards anchors the uncle’s stubborn fight, while Barbara Harris appears as an ally who complicates his resistance to growing up.
