The More the Merrier

ComedyRomance104 min

During World War II’s housing crunch in Washington, D.C., Connie Milligan offers half her apartment to a subtenant and winds up with two unexpected roommates instead. Jean Arthur is Connie, expecting a suitable female tenant and getting the wily Benjamin Dingle (Charles Coburn), who talks his way in and then promptly rents part of his share to young Joe Carter. Joel McCrea brings an irreverent streak to Joe, further upsetting Connie’s carefully managed living arrangement. Out of cramped quarters and improvised rules, the film builds a romantic farce around privacy, propriety, and who gets to claim a corner of the apartment.
