The Magic Flute

ComedyFamilyFantasyMusicalRomance135 min

The Queen of the Night sends Prince Tamino to rescue her kidnapped daughter, Pamina, and he heads for Sarastro’s temple with a magical flute and the bird hunter Papageno. In Ingmar Bergman’s Swedish screen version of Mozart’s opera, Josef Köstlinger is Tamino, while Håkan Hagegård gives Papageno a comic, lovelorn presence alongside him. Irma Urrila’s Pamina stands at the center of the quest, as romance and fantasy move through a theatrical world shaped like an 18th-century stage, with painted scenery, visible spectators, and Bergman’s close attention to faces as the music carries the story forward.
