Scenes from a Marriage
DramaRomance170 min
Marianne and Johan seem like a settled, successful couple, until his confession of an affair exposes how fragile their marriage has become. Liv Ullmann’s Marianne and Johan (Erland Josephson) move from domestic routine into separation, divorce proceedings, and uneasy attempts to reconnect, even as other relationships enter the picture. Directed by Ingmar Bergman, the film stays close to the pair in long, searching conversations and arguments, turning private grievances, tenderness, and habit into the story of a bond neither of them can neatly leave behind.
