Brink of Life

Drama85 min

In a Swedish maternity ward, three women face very different crises around pregnancy and motherhood. Ingrid Thulin, Eva Dahlbeck, and Bibi Andersson carry the film’s shifting focus from bed to bed, as hope, fear, resentment, and uncertainty surface behind the routines of the hospital. Ingmar Bergman keeps the story largely inside the ward, where visits from husbands and exchanges with doctors and nurses press each woman to confront what awaits her beyond the room. Rather than a single storyline, the film moves among their intersecting anxieties, tracing how childbirth can bring expectation, dread, and isolation into the same confined space.
