After a rehearsal of Strindberg’s A Dream Play, theater director Henrik Vogler stays behind in an empty playhouse when his young lead returns, supposedly to look for a bracelet. Erland Josephson is Henrik, a disciplined, exacting man whose conversation with Anna (Lena Olin) quickly turns personal: she speaks bitterly about her late mother, the alcoholic actress Rakel, who was once Henrik’s star and lover. Ingmar Bergman keeps the action inside the theater, where rehearsal, memory, and confession start to overlap, and Ingrid Thulin’s Rakel remains a constant presence in Henrik’s recollections.
