Eddie Taylor is an ex-con trying to build a life after prison, but every door shuts on him—and when he’s framed for murder, he and his wife are pushed into flight. Henry Fonda is Eddie, with Sylvia Sidney’s Joan Graham, a public defender’s secretary who marries him despite the stigma attached to his past. Fritz Lang shapes the story around a couple cornered by public suspicion and the law, following them from a brief shot at ordinary life to the road, an infant in tow, as Eddie finds that freedom has not loosened prison’s grip on him.
