At an isolated Arizona diner, waitress Gabby Maple dreams of leaving the desert behind when a penniless drifter, Alan Squier, wanders in and offers her a glimpse of another life. Bette Davis gives Gabby a restless edge, while Leslie Howard is Alan, an educated outsider with little money and a bleak view of the world. Their rapport is cut short when fugitive gangster Duke Mantee arrives with his gang and takes everyone inside hostage. Humphrey Bogart’s Mantee turns the roadside stop into a standoff, with the staff, travelers, and drifters stuck together overnight and nothing outside but miles of Arizona desert.
