Anna Chlumsky is Vada Sultenfuss, an 11-year-old in the 1970s who lives with death on her mind: her mother is gone, and her father runs the family funeral parlor. Convinced she’s in love with her English teacher, Vada joins a summer writing class while spending her days with Thomas J., Macaulay Culkin’s loyal best friend and next-door neighbor, who seems allergic to everything. As Vada fixates on crushes, funerals, and the adults around her, changes at home force her to sort through jealousy, friendship, and the uneasy first steps out of childhood.
