After a suicide attempt in the late 1960s, Susanna Kaysen (Winona Ryder) is sent to a psychiatric hospital for what is supposed to be a brief stay. Inside the ward, she moves between the institution’s routines, the authority of its doctors and nurses, and the pull of the other young women around her. Angelina Jolie’s Lisa rules the place with volatile charisma, while patients played by Clea DuVall and Brittany Murphy turn the hospital into its own enclosed social world. As Susanna questions her diagnosis and resists the terms of her confinement, the boundary between treatment, rebellion, and identity keeps shifting.
