Fifteen-year-old Charlotte Flax is tired of being uprooted every time her mother decides it’s time to start over. In 1963, the family lands in a small Massachusetts town, where Winona Ryder’s Charlotte is juggling Catholic-school guilt, a crush on an older man, and constant friction with her glamorous, unpredictable mother, Cher’s Mrs. Flax. Charlotte and her younger sister Kate think their mother’s romance with a local shopkeeper may finally mean stability, but the move only brings the family’s arguments, loyalties, and growing pains into sharper focus.
