An idle rich young American enlists in the U.S. Army's Rainbow Division and heads to France, where World War I strips away the ease of his old life. John Gilbert is the privileged recruit, thrown together with two working-class soldiers as army camaraderie gives way to the mud and shock of trench warfare on the Western Front. In the middle of it, he falls for a French girl, with Renée Adorée at the center of their courtship. King Vidor's silent drama moves from marching columns and barracks banter to combat with a clear sense of how quickly bravado disappears.
