The Scarlet Empress

DramaRomanceWar104 min

Sent from Germany to 18th-century Russia for an arranged royal marriage, Sophia Frederica arrives expecting grandeur and finds a court built on ritual, suspicion, and dynastic pressure. Marlene Dietrich is the young noblewoman who will become Catherine the Great, while John Lodge’s Grand Duke Peter stands next in line to the throne and proves a disastrous match. As the marriage turns loveless, Sophia is drawn into affairs, rivalries, and the brutal etiquette of palace life, learning how power moves behind the walls of the Russian empire. The film frames imperial politics through Dietrich’s transformation from naïve bride to calculating figure at the center of court intrigue.
