When an attempted murder case puts married attorneys Adam and Amanda Bonner on opposite sides of the courtroom, the fight over one defendant starts creeping into their own marriage. Spencer Tracy is Adam, the prosecutor, while Katharine Hepburn's Amanda takes the defense and turns the trial into an argument about double standards between men and women. Judy Holliday adds another thread of comic friction as the woman at the center of the case, with the courtroom sparring spilling into dinner-table quarrels, professional one-upmanship, and a marriage suddenly under public and private strain.
