Madame Bovary

DramaRomance115 min

In 19th-century France, Emma Bovary chafes at life with her country-doctor husband and starts chasing the glamour, romance, and status she can’t find in provincial routine. Jennifer Jones is Emma, restless and increasingly reckless as affairs and extravagant spending pull her farther from the life expected of her. Van Heflin appears opposite her as Charles Bovary, a decent, ordinary husband whose steadiness only sharpens her dissatisfaction. Drawn toward wealth, flirtation, and social display, Emma keeps reaching beyond the limits of her marriage and her town, as the film follows desire, debt, and public judgment through the world of Flaubert’s scandalous heroine.
