After years away, Mary Jane returns to see her old schoolfriend Eloise Wengler and Eloise’s daughter Ramona, only to find Eloise drinking heavily and stuck in an unhappy marriage. As Eloise falls asleep, the story slips back to the opening of World War II and the romance that still shadows her life. Susan Hayward is Eloise, looking back on her time with Walt Dreiser, while Dana Andrews is the man at the center of those memories. Mary Jane’s visit also reopens the friendship between the two women, along with the choices and misunderstandings that sent their lives in different directions.
