Champion boxer Billy “The Great” Hope has the belts, the money, and a close life with his wife and young daughter until a personal tragedy sends everything into free fall. Jake Gyllenhaal is Billy, a fighter suddenly without his footing at home or in the ring, while his daughter Leila (Oona Laurence) is pulled out of his reach. Hoping to steady himself, he turns to former boxer Tick Willis (Forest Whitaker), who trains amateurs in a rough neighborhood gym. Antoine Fuqua keeps one eye on Billy’s comeback in the ring and the other on the damage he’s trying to repair outside it.
