After renting a Paris apartment whose previous tenant attempted suicide, a timid file clerk begins to feel hemmed in by suspicious neighbors, strange routines, and the sense that the building wants something from him. Roman Polanski's Trelkovsky moves through cramped hallways and petty complaints that harden into obsession, while Isabelle Adjani is one of the few people around him who seems capable of sympathy. As he fixates on the woman who lived there before him, everyday details give way to hallucination, cross-dressing, and a mounting fear that his identity is being erased.
