After the death of their daughter, John and Laura Baxter travel to Venice, where John takes on the restoration of an old church while the couple try to steady themselves in a city shadowed by funerals and uneasy encounters. Donald Sutherland is John, skeptical when two elderly sisters tell Laura (Julie Christie) that one of them is clairvoyant and has a message from the dead child. Laura is shaken but receptive; John dismisses it, then starts catching strange glimpses and warnings of his own in the narrow streets and canals around him.
