Scarlet Street

CrimeDramaThriller103 min

Christopher Cross is a meek cashier and struggling painter whose infatuation with Kitty March pulls him into a New York swindle. Edward G. Robinson is Chris, a middle-aged man so eager for Kitty’s attention that he lets her claim his paintings as her own. Joan Bennett’s Kitty is really tied to Johnny, a two-bit crook who sees money in Chris’s work and starts tightening the trap. Directed by Fritz Lang, the story moves from a chance encounter to fraud and murder, framed by rain-slick streets, cramped rooms, and the sour bargain at the center of Chris’s devotion.
