Madadayo
ComedyDrama134 min
Postwar Tokyo finds writer-professor Hyakken Uchida entering retirement, where lean years and everyday setbacks are softened by the fierce loyalty of his former students. Tatsuo Matsumura is Uchida, a beloved teacher whose pupils gather each year for a boisterous birthday ritual, raising glasses and shouting “Madadayo” — “Not yet” — when asked if he is ready to go. In warm, gently comic episodes, Akira Kurosawa traces the bond between an aging writer and the students who keep returning to honor him, turning shared meals, small crises, and annual celebrations into a portrait of friendship that refuses to say goodbye.
