Death by Hanging

ComedyCrimeDrama118 min

After a Korean man survives his own execution, the Japanese authorities overseeing the hanging are thrown into crisis over what to do next. The death chamber becomes a closed arena for arguments about identity, memory, guilt, and the state’s power, with Kei Satô and Do-yun Yu among the men pulled into the ordeal. Made in 1968 Japan, the film uses satire and deliberately theatrical staging to press on capital punishment and the treatment of ethnic Koreans, shifting between procedural debate, dark farce, and pointed political confrontation.
