Rhapsody in August
ComedyDramaWar98 min
An elderly survivor of the Nagasaki bombing spends the summer caring for her four grandchildren, whose questions about 1945 draw long-buried grief back into the family. Sachiko Murase is the grandmother at the story’s center, moving through ordinary days marked by memory, silence, and the loss of her husband. When a Japanese-American nephew from Hawaii arrives, Richard Gere enters the household as a link to relatives abroad and to a different inheritance of the war. Akira Kurosawa keeps the focus on family conversation, generational memory, and the shadow the bombing still casts decades later.
