A Scene at the Sea
ComedyDramaRomance101 min
A deaf garbage collector becomes absorbed by surfing after he finds a broken board washed up by the sea, turning a chance discovery into a stubborn personal goal. Claude Maki is the young man teaching himself on the Japanese coast, practicing through falls, stares, and small humiliations as he tries to improve. Beside him is Hiroko Ôshima’s girlfriend, also deaf, who follows him to the beach and encourages his fixation even as it begins to shape their days together. The film stays close to summer routines — work, shoreline walks, repeated attempts in the water — and to the quiet rhythm of a couple moving through the world side by side.
